During the growing season from spring through early autumn, feed your Smoke Tree bonsai every two weeks with a balanced fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. A layer of compost can be applied in spring as a base fertilizer. The tree has modest feeding requirements, but adding nitrogen can boost foliage growth. Avoid fertilizing during winter dormancy, as this can stress the plant.
Your Smoke Tree bonsai requires full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily during the growing season. While it can tolerate partial shade, the tree may grow asymmetrically as it leans toward light sources. Protect it from temperatures below -5°C by moving it to an unheated greenhouse or providing insulation for the pot. The ideal environment has moderate temperatures and average humidity. If kept indoors, place near a bright window but avoid harsh afternoon sun.
Regular pruning throughout the growing season is essential as this species grows rapidly and can become unruly if left unchecked. The foliage grows quickly and tends to droop as it gets larger, requiring frequent trimming to maintain shape. Perform major branch pruning in early spring and remove any dead or damaged wood promptly. To develop a tree-like form rather than a shrub, remove all but one central trunk. The tree tolerates aggressive pruning well, which helps rejuvenate its growth and maintain its desired form.
Special care must be taken with wiring as the bark is quite thin and easily damaged. When wiring branches, use wire thickness that matches the branch diameter - too thick will damage the bark while too thin won't be effective. The wiring should be checked regularly to prevent scarring as branches thicken.
Repot your Smoke Tree bonsai in early spring either annually or every two years. The tree has a well-contained fibrous root system making it relatively easy to repot. Use a basic, well-draining soil mix with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH between 5-6 but not over 7. The tree can grow in various soil types including loam, clay, sand and rocky soils, but avoid wet, soggy conditions. When repotting, don't remove too much of the root mass, and water well afterward to help the tree establish in its new pot.
Younger Smoke Tree bonsai need deep, regular watering, while mature specimens become quite drought tolerant. During the growing season, water moderately about every 10 days, adjusting based on climate conditions. Check the soil before watering - if still damp, wait before watering again. Mature plants are drought-resistant but shouldn't be allowed to dry out completely. The tree prefers moderate humidity but can tolerate drier conditions. Avoid overwatering as this can lead to root problems.
