During the growing season (spring-summer), feed your Premna bonsai weekly with a balanced liquid fertilizer or monthly with solid organic fertilizer pellets. Reduce feeding to once monthly with liquid fertilizer during winter when growth slows down. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers as they can cause weak, spindly growth. Following a regular feeding schedule is essential since Premnas are vigorous growers that require consistent nutrients to maintain their health and support their active growth periods.
For temperate climates where Premnas are grown indoors, fertilizing schedule may need adjustment based on light levels and ambient temperatures. Careful observation of growth patterns will help determine optimal feeding frequency.
As subtropical plants, Premnas require warm temperatures above 10°C (50°F) and high humidity. They thrive in bright locations but need protection from intense midday sun that can scorch their leaves. In temperate regions, grow them indoors in a spot with lots of humidity and bright indirect light. Good air circulation is essential for healthy growth, but protect from cold drafts.
For outdoor growing in tropical climates, choose a location that provides morning sun and afternoon shade. The combination of warmth, humidity and proper light exposure helps maintain the tree's vigorous growth while preventing stress from extreme conditions.
Pruning is crucial for both aesthetic styling and maintaining plant health. For routine maintenance, trim long shoots back to 1-2 leaf pairs after several new leaves have formed. Major structural pruning should be done in summer when the tree can heal faster. Use sharp, clean tools and cut close to the branch collar while avoiding leaving stubs.
Hard pruning of large branches is best performed during the summer growing season as the plant will recover more quickly. Cut paste can be applied to larger wounds to encourage callus formation. Unlike many other bonsai species, Premnas have naturally characterful growth patterns in their trunks and branches, often making extensive wiring unnecessary.
Repot your Premna bonsai every 2 years in spring using a well-draining soil mix with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (5-6). The vigorous root growth of Premnas makes regular repotting essential for maintaining health. When repotting, trim the roots conservatively - never remove more than 1/3 of the root mass. Use a mix of akadama, pumice and lava rock that provides both good drainage and moisture retention.
The new pot should allow adequate room for root growth while maintaining proper tree proportions. Ensure the pot has sufficient drainage holes and use proper bonsai soil that allows roots to thrive without becoming waterlogged.
Premna bonsai are vigorous growers that require generous watering, especially during the growing season. Water thoroughly when the top surface of the soil begins to feel dry, ensuring the entire root mass is soaked but excess water drains freely. Never allow the soil to become waterlogged.
During winter, reduce watering frequency but maintain consistent moisture - the soil should never dry out completely. The high humidity requirements of Premna mean regular misting of the foliage can be beneficial, particularly in dry indoor environments. However, avoid leaving water standing on leaves overnight which can promote fungal issues.
