Fertilizing

During the growing season (spring through early autumn), apply a balanced liquid fertilizer (10-10-10) every two weeks at half strength. The three essential nutrients - Nitrogen, Phosphate, and Potassium - promote healthy growth, with nitrogen supporting leaf development, phosphorus aiding root and flower growth, and potassium strengthening the plant's immune system.

When applying fertilizer, carefully distribute it over the soil surface while avoiding contact with foliage or trunk to prevent burning. During the dormant winter period, reduce fertilization to once monthly or stop altogether. For additional nutritional support, consider supplementing with foliar feeding using a water-soluble fertilizer every other month during the active growing season.

Placement

Jasmine bonsai thrives in bright, indirect sunlight and requires at least 4-6 hours of sun exposure daily. Place the tree in front of a south-facing window when grown indoors, especially during winter months. If growing outdoors during spring and summer, protect it from harsh afternoon sun and bring it inside when temperatures drop below 45°F (7°C).

Pruning

Maintenance pruning should be performed throughout the year by pinching and trimming new growth to maintain the desired shape and size. Never remove more than one-third of the plant at once to avoid weakening the tree. Focus on removing crossing, inward-growing, or leggy branches to maintain proper air circulation and aesthetic appeal.

Regular pruning helps direct energy to the right parts of the plant and encourages balanced growth. However, avoid heavy pruning all at once, as jasmine can be sensitive to aggressive cutting. Instead, maintain a consistent pruning schedule based on the plant's growth rate and vigor. Always use clean, sharp tools to make precise cuts and prevent the spread of disease.

Repotting

Repot your jasmine bonsai every two to four years, or whenever the root system fills the current pot. The best time for repotting is during midsummer when the plant is least fragile. When repotting, remove the plant from its container along with all the old soil, and trim approximately one-third of the root mass to promote new growth.

Prepare a well-draining soil mixture containing 60% inorganic matter (like perlite or vermiculite), 20% organic matter (such as peat moss or composted bark), and 20% coarse sand. Place the tree in a pot slightly larger than the previous one, ensuring proper drainage holes are present. After repotting, keep the plant in a shaded area and water daily for several weeks to help it establish in its new container.

Watering

Maintain consistent soil moisture without letting the growing medium completely dry out or become waterlogged. Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom holes, but wait until the top inch of soil feels slightly dry before watering again. During hot summer months, you may need to water every two to three days, while in cooler seasons, reduce watering frequency accordingly.

High humidity is crucial for jasmine bonsai's health. Place the pot on a humidity tray filled with water and pebbles to increase ambient moisture through evaporation. Daily misting can also help maintain appropriate humidity levels, especially during dry periods or when using indoor heating. Always use room temperature water and avoid watering during the hottest part of the day to prevent root damage.
