Fertilizing

During spring through autumn, apply acid-type fertilizer (like azalea/camellia food) at half strength monthly. If new leaves show yellowing with green veins, supplement with iron chelate fertilizer. Reduce fertilizing frequency to every 1-2 months during winter. Use either slow-release pellets or liquid fertilizer based on your preference and maintenance schedule.

Placement

Place your Gardenia bonsai in a location with 3-4 hours of direct sunlight daily, ideally near a south-facing window if kept indoors. Maintain temperatures between 68-74°F during day and no lower than 60°F at night. Humidity is crucial - use a humidity tray with pebbles and water, but don't let the pot directly touch the water. While it can be kept outdoors in zones 7-9, bring it inside if temperatures drop too low or during extreme heat. Avoid moving the plant frequently as Gardenias are sensitive to location changes.

Pruning

The optimal time for pruning is after the flowering season ends. Cut back long, unbranched growth above leaf joints to maintain a bushy appearance. During the growing season, selectively pinch some branch tips while leaving others to develop flower buds. When wiring, which should be done in late winter or spring, apply pressure gradually and check regularly for wire marks. The Gardenia adapts well to various training styles, particularly umbrella and semi-cascade forms. Handle the plant gently during any pruning or wiring work.

Repotting

Repot every 2-3 years during late winter or spring. When repotting, be conservative with root pruning - remove no more than 10-30% of the roots. Use soil specifically formulated for acid-loving plants, either a pre-made bonsai mix or a custom blend of equal parts Akadama, pumice, and lava rock. The soil should have high organic content and provide excellent drainage while retaining some moisture.

Watering

Monitor soil moisture carefully - keep it consistently moist but never soggy. Check surface color and texture to gauge watering needs; soil lightens in color when dry. During warm months, you may need to water every other day. For thorough watering, place the pot in a shallow dish with 2 inches of water for about 20 minutes until soil feels moist. If soil becomes completely dry, submerge the entire pot for 5 minutes. Avoid using softened water and don't mist the leaves as this can promote fungal growth.
