Fertilizing

During the active growing season (spring through late summer), apply liquid fertilizer weekly and organic fertilizer monthly, ensuring a balanced NPK ratio. The flame tree needs abundant nutrients to support its vibrant flowers and foliage growth. Reduce fertilizing to monthly during winter dormancy, using a lower nitrogen formula to promote root development.

During the growing phase, use a balanced NPK ratio (10-10-10) to promote healthy growth and optimal blooming. Phosphorus-rich fertilizers can help encourage more vibrant flowering. This heavy feeding schedule is vital for maintaining the tree's spectacular red blooms and fern-like foliage.

Placement

The flame tree requires warm temperatures between 60-85°F (15-29°C) and cannot tolerate cold conditions. Place in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In tropical/subtropical regions, it can live outdoors year-round. For cooler areas, keep indoors near a south-facing window during winter, using supplemental grow lights if needed.

Create high humidity conditions by using a humidity tray when kept indoors. Protection from strong winds is essential, as the delicate foliage can be damaged. During winter months, maintain temperatures between 50-68°F (10-20°C) - the warmer the better within this range for continued growth.

Pruning

Hard prune just after dormancy before the growing season begins when the tree is leafless. This allows clear visibility of the branch structure. Remove damaged or crossing branches and thin interior growth to improve air circulation. Throughout the growing season, regularly prune back vigorous shoots to maintain shape and encourage ramification.

For structural pruning and shaping, spring is ideal for wiring branches while they're young and flexible. Use raffia or branch protection when wiring to prevent bark damage. The flame tree responds well to pruning but avoid removing more than 1/3 of growth at once. Regular maintenance pruning helps develop the characteristic umbrella-shaped canopy while keeping growth in check.

Repotting

Repot every 1-2 years in early spring just before new growth begins. Young trees may need annual repotting due to their rapid growth rate. Use a well-draining soil mix containing akadama, pumice, and lava rock. The tree appreciates slightly acidic soil conditions.

When repotting, trim back approximately one-third of the root mass, focusing on removing dead roots and those circling the pot. Choose a shallow but wide pot to accommodate the tree's naturally spreading root system. Water thoroughly after repotting but protect from intense sun for the first week while the tree recovers.

Watering

Monitor soil moisture daily during the growing season, watering thoroughly when the top layer begins to dry. The tree needs consistent moisture but cannot tolerate waterlogged conditions. Reduce watering significantly during winter dormancy when the tree loses its leaves.

Maintain soil pH between 4.5-7.5 and avoid using hard water. The tree can tolerate brief dry periods but never allow the soil to completely dry out. Water deeply rather than frequently to encourage proper root development. Using tepid water helps prevent shock to the root system.
