Fertilizing

During the growing season, apply fertilizer every two weeks with either liquid fertilizer or organic pellets. In winter, reduce frequency to every four weeks if growth continues. The Ficus isn't particularly picky about fertilizer type - both organic and synthetic options work well.

Placement

The Ficus is primarily an indoor tree that requires bright, preferably full sunlight. It can be placed outdoors when temperatures stay above 60°F (15°C). Maintain consistent temperatures and moderate to high humidity. While it tolerates lower humidity due to waxy leaves, higher humidity promotes better growth and is essential for aerial root development. For indoor growing, a south-facing window provides ideal lighting conditions.

Pruning

Regular pruning is essential to maintain the tree's shape and encourage dense growth. After 6-8 leaves have grown, prune back to 2 leaves. For trunk thickening, allow free growth for 1-2 years before making major structural cuts. Leaf pruning (defoliation) effectively reduces leaf size in species with naturally large leaves. The Ficus readily produces new shoots from old wood, making it forgiving of aggressive pruning. However, cover large wounds with cut paste to prevent sap loss and aid healing.

Repotting

Repot every other year in spring using a basic bonsai soil mixture. The Ficus shows remarkable tolerance for root pruning, making it ideal for beginners. In tropical climates, some varieties may require repotting twice yearly due to rapid growth. The tree adapts well to various pot conditions and can develop impressive nebari (surface root spread) when grown in shallow containers.

Watering

Water generously when the soil becomes slightly dry, ignoring fixed schedules in favor of observing the tree's needs. Use room temperature soft water and ensure proper drainage. Daily misting helps maintain humidity and clean foliage, but avoid excessive misting which can promote fungal growth. Watering needs increase in warm, bright conditions and decrease in cooler locations. During winter, reduce watering frequency but maintain consistent soil moisture.
