Fertilizing

Feed every two weeks from early spring to mid-autumn with an acid-loving fertilizer. This species is a lime-hater, so avoid alkaline fertilizers. For young trees and seedlings, supplement with extra phosphorus to promote robust root development and establish a strong foundation for future growth.

Placement

Position the tree outdoors in full sun for optimal growth, ensuring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily except in extremely hot climates. While hardy to -10°F (-23°C), protect from harsh winter winds and frost to prevent die-back. During winter, you can grow it indoors in a bright, airy location away from heat sources. The tree doesn't tolerate atmospheric pollution well, so it thrives better in areas away from urban centers.

Pruning

Due to the tree's rapid growth and inability to bud on old wood, constant pruning maintenance is crucial. Shape through pinching new foliage rather than using scissors, as cut foliage tends to brown. The branches naturally form awkward whorls if left unpruned, so regular maintenance is essential. While wiring can be done year-round, it's best to wait three months after repotting. You can leave wires on for up to two years, but remove them immediately if they start cutting into the bark.

Repotting

Repot every 2-4 years in early to mid-spring for young trees, extending to 3-5 years after age 10. Use fast-draining soil to prevent root rot, though richer mixes might benefit trees in hot climates. The vigorous root system may require repotting every second year, removing up to 1/2 of the root mass. Avoid oversized pots as they retain too much moisture. Use free-draining soil rich in organic matter.

Watering

The Hinoki Cypress requires careful moisture management. While it needs abundant water during active growth and should never completely dry out, excess water leads to root rot. Water moderately in the morning using fast-draining soil, allowing slight drying between waterings. Maintain humidity through regular misting and using a humidity tray with stones, but avoid misting during strong sunlight to prevent leaf burn.
