During the growing season (spring to early fall), apply balanced organic fertilizer every four weeks or liquid fertilizer weekly. Use low nitrogen fertilizers with high potassium and phosphorus to encourage flowering and fruiting. Never fertilize while the tree is flowering or producing fruit, and avoid fertilizing for three months after repotting.
Solid organic fertilizers provide better control but require more time to show effects, while liquid fertilizers act faster. When using fertilizer for edible fruits, opt for organic options to ensure food safety.
Position the tree in a warm, airy location with plenty of direct sunlight, but provide protection from intense afternoon sun that could damage flowers and fruits. The tree prefers drier air over high humidity. Keep indoor temperatures between 41-85°F (5-29°C). For outdoor cultivation, bring the tree indoors when temperatures drop below 45°F (7°C). Place in a sunny window with supplemental grow lights if kept indoors year-round.
Perform major pruning during winter dormancy when leaves have fallen. Trim new shoots back when they reach 4-6 inches to maintain shape and prevent excessive fruiting that could weaken the tree. Don't prune before flowering if you want blooms that season. For training, use wiring techniques on younger flexible branches rather than older brittle ones. The tree works well with semi-cascade, informal upright, slanting, multi-trunk and twisted trunk styles.
Repot every 2-3 years in early spring before leaf buds open. Use well-draining soil mix with 60% aggregate (like decomposed granite) and 40% organic material. When repotting, you can prune 15-25% of the roots to maintain size but ensure enough root mass remains for tree health. Place mesh over drainage holes and add a layer of coarse material at the bottom for proper drainage. Water thoroughly after repotting and protect from wind while the tree reestablishes.
Check soil moisture daily - water when the top layer feels dry. These trees prefer slightly dry conditions but need consistent moisture. During flowering, increase watering frequency. Keep soil slightly moist through winter. Water slowly and thoroughly until it drains from the bottom. Avoid overwatering as the species is prone to root rot. Mist the leaves and trunk weekly but avoid wetting flowers or fruit. Use cool water and maintain consistent watering times.
