During the growing season, feed the Common Quince every two to three weeks to promote healthy growth and disease resistance. In late winter, apply liquid potassium fertilizer to support fruit development. For young trees, organic fertilizers are particularly beneficial in the first year. Use slow-release low nitrogen fertilizer during winters, but limit fertilization to once annually as excessive feeding can invite disease.
Position the Common Quince in full sunlight with at least 6 hours of direct sun daily, preferably facing south or west. The tree thrives in hot summers with optimal growth around 15°C and can withstand temperatures down to -10°C. Ensure good air circulation to prevent mildew, but protect from strong winds. While the tree can survive in semi-shade, fruit production requires full sun exposure. Good placement is crucial for disease prevention and optimal blossoming.
Prune dead and damaged branches after the last frost, being especially careful with branch tips since fruits grow on old growth. Remove overcrowded branches, suckers around the base, and unwanted shoots from the main stem. The ideal wiring period is autumn, though young shoots can be wired in summer. Choose wire thickness that matches branch diameter to avoid bark damage. Cease pruning after mid-summer to protect next year's flowering potential. Since flowers and fruits grow on the same shoots, maintaining new wood growth is essential for continued fruiting.
Young and middle-aged Quince bonsai should be repotted every two years, while older specimens can go five years between repotting. Perform repotting in early spring, avoiding winter and summer periods. Use a well-draining soil mix with a pH between 5-6 but not exceeding 7. The soil mix can include sandy, loamy, or clay components. When repotting, avoid aggressive root pruning and choose an appropriate pot size to prevent the tree from becoming pot-bound.
Regular watering is crucial as Common Quince is not drought-tolerant. Water immediately when soil becomes dry, with deep watering recommended monthly. During the growing season, daily watering may be necessary. Adjust watering frequency based on outdoor temperature and weather conditions. Be careful to avoid overwatering which can lead to fungal diseases, while insufficient watering may cause fruit drop. The soil should be kept moist but never waterlogged.
