During the growing season (spring through autumn), apply solid organic fertilizer due to the Carmona's sensitive root system. One month before flowering, use phosphorus-rich fertilizer to promote blooming. In autumn, switch to a potassium-rich fertilizer. Weekly feeding is recommended during active growth periods, reducing frequency during winter months.
For optimal nutrient absorption, only apply liquid fertilizers to moist soil in carefully measured doses. This helps prevent root burn while ensuring steady growth and healthy flowering cycles.
The Fukien Tea Tree needs to be kept in a warm indoor environment with consistent temperatures around 70°F (20°C). Place near a bright window but avoid direct sunlight that can scorch leaves. In summer, it can go outdoors if nights remain warm, but must come inside when temperatures drop below 60°F (15°C).
During winter, protect from cold drafts and dry heating air. Use a humidity tray with wet gravel beneath the pot and consider supplemental grow lights to compensate for shorter days. Position away from air vents and cold windows to maintain stable temperatures.
Due to its relatively slow growth rate, major structural pruning should be limited to late winter just before spring growth begins. Allow new shoots to extend to about 5cm before pruning back to 2 leaves. Regular pinching throughout the growing season helps develop dense foliage and refined branch structure.
Young shoots are flexible and easy to wire, but mature branches become brittle. Wire carefully before branches lignify in autumn. When pruning larger branches, always use cut paste as the tree heals slowly. The Carmona handles regular maintenance pruning well but avoid removing too much foliage at once.
Repot every 2-3 years in early spring, being particularly gentle with the sensitive root system. Unlike other bonsai, avoid aggressive root pruning - only trim thick roots and carefully comb out the perimeter with a root hook. Use a well-draining mix of akadama, pumice and a small amount of organic matter.
Young trees may need more frequent repotting as they become established. Only repot when the root ball is dense and wait for warm weather to ensure good recovery. When repotting, minimize root disturbance and avoid removing more than necessary.
Water thoroughly when the soil surface begins to dry but before it becomes completely dry. The Carmona has fine roots sensitive to both overwatering and drought. Check soil moisture daily by touching the surface - if it feels barely damp, water deeply until it runs from the drainage holes.
While not required, regular misting helps maintain humidity, especially during winter when indoor heating creates dry air. Never let the soil become waterlogged as this can quickly lead to root rot. Allow proper drainage and never leave the pot standing in water.
